Community:  Environment

For many years, Seward residents have joined together in the interest of our natural environment. Ongoing projects serve the goal of protecting the Mississippi River bluff, protecting our lakes from pollution, and raising awareness of dangers in our air and soil. From community gardens to compost education and alternative power sources, the Environment Committee has always worked hard together to improve our quality of life.

Meetings

Committee meetings are normally held at 7 PM on the third Monday of the month at the Matthews Center, 2318 29th Ave. S.

Current projects

2009 Climate Change Innovations Project Grant Report from the SNG Environment Committee

The two sources of greenhouse gasses that are under the most control by residents of Seward neighborhood are home energy use (heating, air conditioning, lighting, hot water) and transportation energy use. This project, a partnership with Seward Redesign and with the collaboration of the Seward Civic and Commerce Association, the Seward Co-op, and Augsburg College, addressed both of these sources. By leveraging the excitement of community events happening in Seward last summer, the activities were able to reach a broad audience. Activities included:

  • Free Home Energy Conservation Workshops at the Seward Co-op
  • Events to promote walking, biking, and public transit
  • Significant subsidies to carts and wagons to make walking to shopping easier
